Flights of Discovery celebrates NASA’s Neil A. Armstrong Flight Research Center’s (AFRC) work over the past 75 years. Established in 1946 under the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (the NACA) as a satellite of Langley, Armstrong earned its independence in 1958, the same year the NACA transitioned into NASA.
What became the AFRC was established in conjunction with the X-1 supersonic project in 1946. Over the decades it has been a principal actor in some of the most unusual and extraordinary aeronautical developments in history. Although its engineers expected to return to Langley at the end of the X-1 program, the Air Force and the NACA realized how little they knew of the frontier of flight that opened after eclipsing Mach 1 in 1947. As a result, most of the NACA engineers stayed, and the satellite campus became a center. This book is an account of their and subsequent generations of employees’ work, their successes and failures, and the significance of their work. The book is rich with imagery.
